JavaScript: Web Hosting’s Unsung Hero

By Tim Brown

Not to be confused with JAVA, JavaScript (or JS) is one of the more fundamental programming languages for building pages on the Web. Because it is object-oriented—dependent upon user interaction with on-screen items—JavaScript provides a very responsive experience for the end-user. As scripting languages go, it is fairly forgiving. As such, it serves as the foundation for programming frameworks like ember, jQuery, backbone, and angular. Being such an elementary component of so many website processes, JavaScript Web hosting is all but a universal provision of all host services.

JavaScript Basics

Any developer worth their chops has a background in JavaScript. New users can employ the language to create simple apps like a calculator or to show the date and time when a page loads. Once they have their legs underneath them, so to speak, they can use JavaScript for some basic Web functions. JS helps with browser detection and control so that Web pages work properly on different browsers and customized windows include all of the required functionality elements. Cookies rely on JavaScript to store information on a guest’s computer so it can be retrieved automatically on the next visit. Finally, JS is used in form validation to make sure what is entered in a text box on a Web page is formatted correctly (like including the @ symbol in an email address).

Other JavaScript Uses

Aside from those basic duties, JS provides little in the way of functions; instead it serves to enhance functionality. JavaScript hosting also supports a number of other programming languages like HTML, AJAX, and CSS. Thanks to its object orientation, JS facilitates smooth website and browser communication by assisting with events such as mouse clicks, mouse movement, and window size. JavaScript is a very interactive language that contributes to overall site enhancement.

One way to look at JavaScript is like a thermostat. Your house is the website, another programming language is the heater, and the function to be performed is warming the house. In terms of content, JavaScript tells AJAX to add new content as it becomes available (like updating a stock ticker or a sports score). It also helps CSS perform layout functions; JS finds the positon and size of an element in relation to the size of the window to prevent overlapping when the page loads. To further support CSS, JavaScript helps smooth out styling elements such as creating fades and sizing, and positioning animations.

As you can see, JavaScript can be very much an independent language for basic duties like form validation and cookies. At the same time, its flexibility makes it an integral complement to other programming languages. With fundamental uses on websites ranging from enterprise-level dedicated servers to free Web hosting, JavaScript is such a dynamic programming tool that every developer should know how to use it. Call it the thermostat, a communication conduit, or the grease that oils the machine, but JavaScript really is the Web developer’s Swiss Army knife.

JavaScript is a fundamental component to nearly all websites. You can learn more about other basic Web features and where to host your site right here.
